The North Carolina Historical Marker Commission has recognized Our Very Own...BRIGADIER GENERAL EDWARD VAIL as a significant part of North Carolina history by AWARDING HIM A NORTH CAROLINA HISTORICAL HIGHWAY MARKER. This designation honors BRIGADIER GENERAL EDWARD VAIL as an important and educational part of North Carolina history. THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT HONOR FOR THE VAIL FAMILY, as well.

A dedication ceremony to commemorate the Event will be held on Saturday, November 21, 2015 at SOUNDSIDE ROAD, EDENTON, NC at 11:00 am. Speakers for the morning will include Chowan County's House of Representative Bob Steinburg. The Albemarle Chapter of the SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION will serve as Color Guard for this distinguished occasion. The NC Highway Marker Commission welcomes the public to share in and witness this EXCITING HISTORICAL EVENT.

The Marker will read as follows:

EDWARD VAIL

1717-1777

Colonial Statesman and

Brigadier General of the

Edenton District Militia.

Member, NC Committee

of Correspondence, 1768,

1773 � 1774.  Lived 2 mi. SW.

 

Press Release document will outline:

"Brigadier General Vail served in the French Indian War 1754. He represented Chowan County in the Assembly from 1754-62, 1770-71, and 1773-74. Locally, Edward Vail was a member of the County Court in 1756 and was one of 5 trustees named in 1767 to erect the brick court house in Edenton that still stands.

As a Colonel, Vail accompanied William Tryon in the 1771 expedition against the Regulators. With the approach of the Revolution, he was one of eight members of the Committee of Correspondence.

Edward Vail was married to Susannah Salter Vail, one of the signers at the Edenton Tea Party on 24 October 1774."

FOLLOWING THE DEDICATION, THE VAIL FAMILY WILL HOST A RECEPTION/ LUNCHEON AT THE CHOWAN COUNTY COURTHOUSE
