What a great reunion at a new venue in New Bern, NC! We chose New Bern, not only because it was a new place to meet, but because our historian, George Haislip, did an incredible job of researching the "Vail" connection to this wonderful historic city! The main event was visiting the cemetery of Madame Moore, sister of our ancestor, General Edward Vail, who led the North Carolina Edenton District Militia in the Revolutionary War. Madame Moore had an amazing storied past as well. Her full name at death was Mary Vail Jones Wilson Moore. Janice Cutchin repeated her role as President and with the help of the other officers (George Haislip, Vice-President & Historian; Gail Hodges, Secretary; Kent Vail, Treasurer) planned a fantastic itinerary and dinner at the reunion! George scheduled the wonderful historic activities which included, the Christ Episcopal Church Tour, The Benners Vail Home Tour, and the very informative Trolley Tour of New Bern. This was capped off by the elegant and delicious dinner Saturday night, organized by Janice, at the Chelsea Restaurant in downtown New Bern. We celebrated the 90th birthday of our matriarch and one of the original founders and historians, Vail Ellis Hope!! We even had Vail ancestors come all the way from Anchorage, Alaska. Hats off to Marcia & Skip Stock and their daughter, Naomi! 2017 Photos: click here DATES: July 21 - 23 PLACE: New Bern, NC - The Courtyard Marriott Riverfront at 218 Front Street To read the 2017 Welcome Letter from our President, click here. It was a bit smaller than in past years, but Janice Cutchin, our Vice-President, organized and planned an incredible Saturday evening dinner at the Chowan Golf & Country Club! Our President, Taren Vail, designed the T-Shirts this year and our Secretary, Nan Vail, organized a tour of the 1767 Chowan County Courthouse. New officers were elected, so click on the "Officers" button above to see who they are. The minutes will be posted soon. Click here for 2013 Reunion photos. Thanks Janice! ******************************************************************************************************************************* In Loving Memory Vail Hope Ellis 4/26/1927 - 5/2/2022
Our Loving Matriarch, Vail Hope Ellis, has gone to join her husband in heaven at 12:30am on May 2nd, 2022. She was one of the authors of the "The Vail's of Albemarle" written along with Roy A. Vail and Ellen Vail Pace which was the catalyst for the creation of this wonderful family group. She was obviously and absolutely more than just an author of the book, though. She was our leader, our mentor, our historian, our backbone, and the light of our group! She was loved and appreciated by all who knew her. She leaves a great legacy to her family as well as to her extended Vail family. Her obituary is posted here: https://www.richandthompson.com/tributes/Carolynne-Ellis

******************************************************************************************************************************* In Loving Memory Joan Atkinson Gifford 11/13/1934 - 1/2/2020
Dearest Friends, It is with a heavy heart that I let you know that my precious sister, Joan, departed this life yesterday around 6 pm in San Antonio. Her daughter, Ashley, called her on New Year's Day; with no answer, she rushed to her apartment finding her slumped in a chair. She was taken to a nearby hospital immediately, but never regained consciousness for 2 days. So maybe it was meant to be. As soon as Ashley & Charles can get a plan together, I will be going there for a Memorial Service in the Chapel at the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas. I always enjoyed attending services there with Joan whenever I visited. It is a delightful, little Chapel in a beautiful setting on a high hill overlooking San Antonio. She wished to be cremated, with ashes scattered in the Garden around the Chapel. Joan had a wonderful, adventurous life with an outstanding and meaningful career, and leaves behind two wonderful children, 4 grandchildren and a host of lifetime friends. I will miss her dearly, as she was the closest thing to me since our parents died. I know she always loved and admired each of you and knew how Special you are to me. With much love and deep devotion, Janice Link to Joan's Obituary:https://www.missionparks.com/obituaries/Joan-Gifford/#!/Obituary ******************************************************************************************************
